A gentle introduction to grooming

The 10-Day Premium Puppy Program includes Puppy’s First Grooming Introduction.
We help your puppy explore the grooming space, brushing, gentle paw and face handling,
tools and sounds at a pace they’re comfortable with. We may introduce nail trimming if
your puppy is ready. The goal is to build positive experiences with grooming, not to rush
them through a full service.

Cooperative care and handling exercises are part of both program options.

Is Puppy Starter right for my puppy?

We’ll review your puppy’s age, health and vaccination records, and comfort level before
they begin. Every puppy is different, so our team will help you choose a suitable starting point.

Puppy FAQs

How often should I train my puppy?

Practice with your puppy every day, but keep each session short and fun. Work on one cue at a time and repeat it three to five times before taking a break. Puppies can become confused or lose interest when we ask for too much at once. You can also practice skills such as responding to their name or coming when called during everyday routines. At Muttz with Mannerz, we help pet parents make puppy training clear, positive and practical.

When should puppy classes begin?

At Muttz with Mannerz, puppies can begin classes as early as 10 weeks old, once they have had their first vaccine booster and meet our class health requirements. Starting young gives your puppy opportunities to learn in a supervised setting while you build the skills to guide them at home. Your puppy does not need to know any cues before joining Puppy Manners

How do I stop puppy biting?

Puppy biting is common during play and teething, but an overtired puppy may bite more, too. Puppies aged 8–12 weeks may need around 18–20 hours of sleep a day; many puppies aged 3–6 months still need around 16–18 hours, though individual needs vary. Offer an appropriate chew toy when your puppy bites hands or clothing. If they are too wound up to redirect, help them settle for a quiet rest. Reward gentle play and respond consistently. Our puppy trainers can help if biting remains difficult to manage

How do I crate train?

Start by helping your puppy feel comfortable near the crate. Leave the door open, let them explore at their own pace and offer treats or meals inside. Once they are entering willingly, practice closing the door for a few seconds while you stay nearby, then gradually build up the time. Give your puppy a potty break before longer rest periods. If they show distress, make the next step easier. Our goal is for the crate to become a comfortable place to rest. Crate size should be big enough for the pup to stand up and turn around.

When can my puppy start daycare?

A puppy can start Muttz with Mannerz Day School when they meet our health requirements and our team determines through a Meet & Greet that the program is a good fit. We consider your puppy’s vaccination records, comfort around dogs and people, and ability to take breaks. A gradual start may be best for some puppies. Our structured Day School includes supervised social time, enrichment and rest, with a Puppy Starter option for young dogs who need extra support.

How much exercise does my puppy need?

Your puppy needs a balance of gentle physical activity, mental enrichment and plenty of rest. The right amount depends on their age, breed, health and how they respond. Short walks, sniffing, play and brief training sessions all count. Watch for signs that your puppy is tired or becoming overexcited, and avoid pushing them through strenuous exercise. Your veterinarian can advise you about activities suited to your puppy’s stage of growth.

What vaccinations are required?

For Muttz with Mannerz Day School, puppies must have age-appropriate vaccinations and current veterinary records. Our published Day School policy lists the required vaccines and timing, including the second DHPP set for puppies over 12 weeks old. Bordetella is part of our Day School requirements. Ask our team about the requirements for your puppy’s specific class or program, and speak with your veterinarian about their vaccine schedule.

What should my puppy know by 6 months?

By six months, aim for progress rather than perfection. Your puppy may be learning to respond to their name, come when called, walk on a leash, settle for short periods and handle everyday care. They should also be gaining positive experience with the sights, sounds and people in their world. Puppies develop at different rates, and adolescence can bring new challenges. Muttz with Mannerz can help you choose the next training step for your puppy.
