Is your pet in pain or just not acting like themselves? Did you know that this can be caused by imbalances that could be treated with a modality like acupressure?

In our recent podcast, Jesse from Birch Animal Wellness shared with us the modalities that she uses with her clients to help them have the highest quality of life possible. One of her top choices to help your dog live a better life is acupressure.

What is Acupressure?

Acupressure is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that aims to clear blockages in the energetic channels throughout the body by applying light pressure to acupoints to restore the harmonious flow of Chi. The body’s Chi can be disrupted, weakened, or blocked if there is imbalance between the pairs of yin and yang organs or between the Five Elements. (From Jesse’s website birchanimalwellness.com).

If you are familiar with acupuncture, acupressure targets the same areas as that practice, but needles are not used. There are many categories of acupressure points, some that are more powerful, some govern regions or systems of the body, and others that (re)connect organ systems.

How can this imbalance affect my dog?

Some of the ways that these imbalances can display in your pet are:

  • Behavioural problems such as:
    • separation anxiety
    • difficulty concentrating
    • aggression.
  • Physical problems such as:
    • joint pain
    • digestive issues
    • itchy skin
    • other chronic wellness issues.

What happens during an appointment?

Healing Power of TouchAn acupressure appointment with Jesse is both an assessment and a working session.

Using association points along the spine, and four exams of Traditional Chinese Medicine she can determine which meridians or organ systems in your dog are imbalanced.

During the session Jesse will talk with you about your pet’s medical and behavioural background and share with you what she is seeing.

The treatment itself is done by applying gentle pressure to specific acupressure points along those meridians that she finds out of balance.

Using this technique, she can help your dog re-balance all the energetic systems of their chi and provide you with some techniques to use on your own.
